This post outlines how to use modernist poetry as an engagement activity for an introductory College Communications course.
Selling the importance of reading, writing and communicating properly is a hard sell. This idea of WIIFM is a great way to have students brainstorm what’s in it for them and for us, as teachers, to align to their expectations.
I created this concept map of my introductory College Communications course, ENG1002. This course is taught to most first year students at the College and includes the basics of English communication.
Students should recognize that you need the right tool or tools for the job, and know when to ask for help.
Instead of using an analogy for something my students find difficult to understand, I used the analogy of an iceberg to teach people about the teaching profession — most of what teachers do is done below the surface, out of sight!
